Travel + Leisure Touts Hotel Hana-Maui Among 'World's Best'

Over sixty years ago Hotel Hāna-Maui opened as the first luxury resort on the lush Hawaiian island of Maui. Today, it is still considered among the premier hotels in the world as evidenced by its recent inclusion on Travel + Leisure’s 2009 “World’s Best Awards,” not once, but twice. Hotel Hāna-Maui was included among the top 100 hotels in the world, as well as in the top three hotels in Hawaii in the August 2009 issue of the magazine.

Tucked among the trees on 66 acres of unspoiled land along Maui’s eastern coast, Hotel Hāna-Maui reflects a fitting blend of Hawaiian heritage and beauty, and certainly is not a stranger to such celebrated acclaim. A recipient of the prestigious AAA Four Diamond Award, Hotel Hāna- Maui recently received the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for the third year in a row. Earlier this year, the hotel was included on Condé Nast Traveler’s Gold List and Travel + Leisure’s “50 Best Romantic Getaways.”

As Hawaii commemorates the 50th Anniversary of its Statehood this year, Hotel Hāna-Maui will continue to celebrate the timeless Hawaiian culture which has made it such a revered resort, and in which its roots are so firmly entwined.

Hotel Hāna- Maui is located in the secluded town of Hāna on the island of Maui. For reservations please visit www.hotelhanamaui.com or call 808.248.8211.

The Third Time’s a Wine Charm!

Hotel Hāna-Maui Wins Wine Spectator Award for Third Consecutive Year

Wine Spectator Magazine has revealed it will recognize the Hotel Hāna-Maui with its coveted Award of Excellence for a third consecutive year in its August issue. The magazine lauds the luxury property on the lush eastern shore of Maui for offering an intelligent, accurately-priced wine list that compliments the resort’s character and cuisine. “Honoring the spirit of place and ʹohana [community] is at the heart of everything we do here,” says food and beverage director Keith Mallini, “even selecting wines.”

A seasoned sommelier, Mallini has been instrumental in marrying the list’s widely known vintages with some unexpected finds. To wit, the 50+ vintages from Napa Valley California, emphasize established producers (Miner Family Vineyards, Sterling Vineyards) as well as cult-winemakers-in-the-making such as Mia Klein. While the majority of bottles come from California and Oregon appellations, there are international offerings too, including esoteric bottles such as J.J. Prum, Bernkasteler Badstube, Riesling Spätlese, Mosel, 2003, and Mt. Difficulty, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2006.

While the list is well-balanced, particular attention has been paid to the Pinot Noir vertical. This hard-to-grow grape produces dividends in wines that stand up to the earthy, sweet, and aromatic flavors of executive chef Robert McCormick’s locally-sourced menu. McCormick, who arrived in the spring following stints at Seeger’s in Atlanta, Georgia; Citronelle in Washington, D.C.; and Café Boulud in Palm Beach, Florida, crafts his menus from island-sourced seafood, meat, vegetables and fruit. Here, paradise on a plate is complimented by fine wines.

The list at Hotel Hāna-Maui buzzes with interest, an opportunity Mallini has magnified by brining noted winemakers from the mainland to share their vintages at intimate wine dinners at Kaʹuiki, the hotel’s fine restaurant. In April 2009, the Hotel Hana-Maui hosted nine boutique winemakers from Oregon’s Willamette Valley. “Our wine weekends afford guests and kamaʹaina [locals] the pleasure of improving their wine literacy in casual conversation with winemakers in a place where the rain forest meets the ocean,” says Mallini. “These gatherings are very special.”

The Hotel Hāna-Maui will next welcome a second-generation California winemaker, Kathleen Heitz Myers on August 29-30 2009. She will bring Heitz Cellar’s single vineyard verticals for two exclusive tastings – the hotel is the only spot in Hawaii offering these boutique wines.  The cost to attend the five-course dinner is $150; “Heitz Tea on the Lanai” is $80. To reserve seats, please contact Keith Mallini: 808-270-3285;  keithmallini@hotelhanamaui.com.

With more kudos from Wine Spectator, an ever-expanding list, a sommelier bringing vintners for intimate tastings and a chef who delights in matching local flavors with world class appellations, the Hotel Hāna-Maui is the toast of the Pacific coast.

Lono Ono

A Harvest Moon Weekend Celebrates Local Flavor, Farms and Culture

Long before the colonists broke bread on Plymouth Rock, native Hawaiians have been celebrating the autumn harvest with elaborate feasts in honor of the “Harvest Moon.” This October, the first Hawaiian retreat, Hotel Hāna-Maui, in the secluded village of Hāna, on the lush eastern coast of Maui, will celebrate the Hāna Harvest Moon throughout the weekend of October 2-4, 2009 with feasts and festivities worthy of Lono, the ancient Hawaiian god of fertility whom it is believed made the crops flourish.

The Hāna Harvest Moon Weekend highlights the sustainable, symbiotic relationship Hotel Hāna-Maui enjoys with the local farmers of Hāna. The arrangement developed purely out of necessity and product availability, and throughout the years the farmers have blossomed to provide an abundance of local Hawaiian produce. The Harvest Moon festivities grew out of the ancient Makahiki harvest festival which began in late October or early November when the Pleiades constellation was first observed rising above the horizon at sunset. The celebrations at Hotel Hāna-Maui begin the evening of Friday, October 2, and culminate on Sunday evening, with the rising of the Harvest Moon, and include:

Welcome reception with executive chef Robert McCormick, local farmers, growers and fishermen, as well as Hāna “Kapuna” – elders from the hotel and community. Chef led tour of Kahanu National Tropical Botanical Garden for a look at examples of “Canoe Crops” brought to the islands by the first Polynesian settlers. Hawaiian cultural food discussion, Poi pounding demonstration and picnic lunch at Hamoa Beach. Papa ˊAina Dinner at the Plantation Guest House featuring culturally significant and locally grown foods served family style. Chef led tour of Ono Farm – providers of exotic fruits for the hotel. Picnic lunch at Laulima Farm, an organic farm which grows the majority of produce served at the hotel. Harvest Moon Food & Wine Dinner celebration under the moon and the stars on the grounds of the wellness pool featuring authentic entertainment, telescopes and astrology readers.

Tickets may be purchased a la carte or as part of a package. Individual event tickets range in price from $50- $180. Food and Beverage package tickets are $430* per person and include all five events and tours. Special room rates are available starting at $395* per night, and all inclusive packages for three nights and all meals are available from $2186.00*.

*Prices exclude all taxes. Room rates are based on availability.
